Why November is the time to check your heating
By the time November arrives in Lawrence and Topeka, most of us have already had a few chilly mornings and switched the thermostat from cooling to heating. That first real run of the season is when a furnace that sat idle all summer has to prove itself. If something is worn, dirty or out of adjustment, it tends to show up on the coldest night, when every heating company in the area is getting calls at once. A little attention now means you find out about small problems while there is still plenty of time to deal with them calmly.
What equipment maintenance actually involves
A tune up is a visit where we look over your heating and cooling equipment, check how it runs and tell you plainly what we see. Our goal is to catch minor issues early, improve efficiency and keep comfort steady through the season. You can read more about what is included on our HVAC equipment maintenance page.
Catching small issues before they get expensive
Many heating problems start small. A part that is wearing out, a system that takes longer than it used to to warm the house, or a furnace that cycles on and off more than you expect are all signs worth having looked at. When we find something minor during a visit, we explain it in plain words and fix it early, with your approval, rather than waiting for it to turn into a breakdown.
Efficiency and your energy bills
Equipment that runs the way it should does not have to work as hard to keep your home warm. Part of a tune up is an efficiency check, which helps keep energy bills in line once the cold settles in.
Simple things you can check yourself
Before you call, there are a few easy things any homeowner can look at. None of them replace a professional visit, but they help you spot trouble sooner.
- Thermostat: switch it to heat and set it a few degrees above room temperature. Listen for the system to start up and make sure warm air actually follows.
- Air filter: a clogged filter makes the whole system work harder. Check it and replace it if it looks dirty.
- Vents and registers: make sure furniture, rugs or curtains are not blocking them so air can move freely through each room.
- Sounds and smells: a brief dusty smell on the first run is common, but unusual banging, grinding or squealing deserves a call.
- Utility closet: keep the area around the furnace clear of boxes and clutter.
